Funding sought for Phnom Penh port expansion

Bangkok: Authorities are looking at ways to finance a new $20m terminal at Phnom Penh Autonomous Port which will double container handling capacity there to 300,000 teu when it opens in 2017.

The port is looking at either tapping Chinese funding or listing some of its assets on the local exchange. China helped fund the first phase of the port.

In addition to the cargo terminal’s expansion, the port authority is currently seeking approval from the government to build a new Special Economic Zone on 1,000 ha of land surrounding the new port.

A third phase of expansion for the port is planned to start from 2018, bringing the port's total handling capacity up to 500,000 teu.

More than 61,000 teu passed through the port during the first half of the year, up about 21% from the 50,000 teu during the same period last year.  [24/10/14]
